Design

The real shape under sail: the 3D reference for your designs and your models.

Sail lofts, naval architects, laboratories: the shape under sail, measured by LiDAR, in the boat reference frame and sail-loft conventions.

A mission, or the data from an equipped boat

Test campaign, research collaboration: we build the framework with you.

A digital twin of the sails, continuously updated

From the point cloud, Sail Controls analyses and processes the data in real time to reconstruct the exact geometry of the sail.

The process relies on advanced algorithms that detect edges, curvatures and deformations, turning this raw information into an accurate digital model of the shape under sail. Continuously updated, the model shows the real shape of the sail under the effect of wind and trim.

This digital twin of the sails, connected to their physical behaviour, makes it possible to analyse the rig and sails as a whole: depending on sensor placement, several sails and parts of the rig are tracked, mast deformation included.

What the measurement lets you decide

  • Calibrate your manufacturing tools

Improve the accuracy of production tools for faithful reproduction of digital designs.

  • Compare your sails and settings

Sail designs against one another, several settings of the same sail, or the same sail over time, all measured under sail.

  • Confront your models with reality

A direct 3D measurement, with no photogrammetric reconstruction: quantitative data to calibrate your simulations.

  • In your reference frame

The shape under sail, delivered as 3D files in the boat reference frame you provide.

A shared language with your designers

The sail is analysed section by section, each one characterised by values that follow sail-loft conventions: a shared language that strengthens the dialogue with designers.

The 3D files integrate the shape under sail in the boat reference frame provided by the client. Each recording corresponds to one setting.

Measured sails displayed in 3D modelling software

From measurement to analysis

Measured under sail, reconstructed, then confronted with simulation: the real shape of the sail fits into your study workflows.

Two trims, same wind

Each measured trim has its own shape, so your simulations can compare their effects.

Frequently asked questions

How is the shape measured?

LiDAR sensors mounted on deck capture a 3D point cloud of the sail; the Sail Controls computer reconstructs its geometry and characterises it section by section.

Which LiDAR sensors do you use?

LiDAR sensors suited to sailing, chosen for their resolution and range according to the size of the rig. Details are presented as part of a project.

Which files do we receive?

3D files of the measured shape, in the boat reference frame you provide, with its sections and indicators on your Sail Controls portal.

Do you deliver raw point clouds?

No: we deliver processed 3D files, in the boat reference frame; a CFD-ready export is available on request.

Can we get the data into our own tools?

Yes. 3D shapes and measured values can be downloaded from your portal; with the onboard system, an API also opens the data to your own tools.

Do you compare the measurement with our design file?

You receive the measured shape as 3D files in the boat reference frame, with its indicators per section: the comparison with your design data is done in your own tools.

How long does a measurement mission last?

One to several weeks: the system stays aboard and your crew starts the recordings during its usual sailing.

Can we work with the data from a boat that is already equipped?

Yes, with the team's agreement: it invites you onto its Sail Controls portal and chooses what you see there.

Who owns the data?

The client who orders the mission or equips the boat: the data remains its exclusive property and is used only for its project. Sail Controls may only aggregate anonymous technical metrics from it, to improve the product.
