Diagnostics · One-off measurement
The real state of your sails: sail by sail, compared, tracked over time.
A one-off service: the measurement system aboard for the length of a mission, then the real shape of each sail, setting by setting, on your portal and as 3D files.
Services
A one-off measurement, for the length of a mission
One-off measurement
No permanent installation: the system stays aboard for one to several weeks, during your usual sailing, and your results are gathered on your portal. To track your sails over time, a new mission repeats the measurement.
01
Study
Preliminary boat study: sensor placement, custom-designed mounts.
02
Install
Sail Controls installs the system aboard, calibrates each measured sail and briefs the crew.
03
Sail
You sail your usual programme: from a tablet, the crew starts recordings and puts them in context with custom markers (“good balance”, “fully sheeted”…), as many sessions as needed, over one to several weeks.
04
Quality check and calibration
Every session is checked and calibrated by our team, then processed with our tools to deliver a reliable shape for each sail, section by section.
05
Retrieve
On your portal: every session with its sailing context, to compare, and the 3D files to download, in your boat's reference frame; CFD-ready export on request.
Already have an onboard system? Diagnostics are included: every outing measures the state of your sails.
What the measurement lets you decide
Baseline
The real shape of each sail, measured under sail, setting by setting.
Before / after
Compare a sail before and after a recut, or a new sail with the one it replaces.
Tracking over time
Track how your sails deform season after season, mission after mission.
Keep, recut, replace
Measured shapes to decide with your sail loft, rather than by eye.
What you receive
For each sail and each setting: the measured shape, section by section, and its indicators.
Example result
| Section | Draft (%) | Camber (%) | Twist (°) | Sag (m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top | 41 | 9.0 | 21 | 0.40 |
| Middle | 39 | 9.4 | 18 | 0.50 |
| Bottom | 38 | 8.6 | 12 | 0.45 |
Reading a sail section
- Draft (%)
- Position of maximum depth along the chord, as % of the chord.
- Camber (%)
- Maximum depth of the section, as % of the chord.
- Twist (°)
- Angle of the chord to the boat's centreline; its variation from one section to the next reflects the twist of the sail.
- Sag (m)
- Curvature of the section's luff, lateral and longitudinal.
Accuracy measured while sailing, under real load. And improving every season.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a measurement mission last?
One to several weeks: the system stays aboard and your crew starts the recordings during its usual sailing.
What will I receive?
For each sail and each session: the measured shape section by section, its indicators and the 3D files, checked by our team and gathered on your Sail Controls portal.
Can we track how a sail evolves?
Yes: repeated measurements, mission after mission, show how each sail deforms over its working life.
Do we need to know how to use the system?
No. Sail Controls installs the system, calibrates each sail and briefs your crew: recordings are started from a tablet.
Do my sails need to be modified?
No. The measurement is taken remotely from the deck: no sensor in the sails, and the same sensors measure your whole sail wardrobe.
Where do you operate?
Wherever the boat sails: travel arrangements are set out in the quote.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is provided on quotation, based on your boat and your sail wardrobe.
